Issue 2012.02 February Issue

Message from Anna

Dear Friends,

January went by like a blink of an eye and here we are now in the month of love. Some call it cheesy but admit it or not, we all need love in whatever form it comes. For me, love came as a pleasant surprise as we found out that we are once again expecting our fourth child! Although, anxiety was my initial response, it soon gave way to a feeling of grace and gratitude that God has given us another new life to guide. I'm just glad that the fourth time around, I have all the safe and natural products that I need to help ensure that our new baby grows in an environment that is gentle to his/her developing body and to the planet as well.

Let love and goodness grow in this month of February not only by continuing to promote Human Nature but by showing support for other social enterprises as well. I especially love our featured CSI product of the month: Gourmet Keso. These premium soft cheeses are hand-crafted at the GK Enchanted Farm by the residents using the finest ingredients starting with goats' cheese infused with organic farm-grown herbs. Truly delicious and world-class! Every purchase of Gourmet Keso helps the residents of GK Enchanted Farm and contributes to building capacity in the countryside.

Wishing you the best always,

Anna

Sunflower Harvest in GK Catigan

Ever since we launched CommPassion campaign, the farmers of GK Pueblo Antonio in Catigan have been planting different varieties of Sunflower for our best selling Sunflower Beauty Oil. Seeds from all over the world were sourced to find out the variety that will grow best on Philippine soil. Passionfruit has also been established in 2 hectares near the GK site that will soon be used for our lip care products. We're currently conducting training on the monitoring & documentation of these test plots so that our learning will be replicable in other GK communities.

Featured CSI Product of the Month: Gourmet Keso

"A Cheesy Story"
By Xilca Alvarez

It all started as a joke.

I was grappling with a premature midlife crisis, and attended an inspiring Gawad Kalinga (GK) Center for Social Innovation forum in Ateneo de Manila University sometime in October 2010, in the desperate hopes of finding some business students/professors to create a sustainable livelihood program for ex-cons (probationers, to be more specific - a pet advocacy of mine). Instead, I was instantly enthralled by the idea of this mystical GK Enchanted Farm, which they were developing as a "village university and silicon valley for social enterprises," and a "social tourism site" where bed and breakfasts would rise, and tourists would flock to be served the best produce and experience an inclusive and thriving GK community; one that would also encourage reverse migration with the promise of sustainable livelihood and would serve as a catalyst for countryside development. So curious was I that I found myself going to this "enchanted" farm in Angat, Bulacan the very next day with some GK officers.

Dangerous Chemicals 101: Triethanolamine (TEA)

Babies -God's precious little gifts, everyone's little bundle of joy; so pure and innocent. Why then do we expose them to harmful chemicals at such a young and fragile state when there's a much safer, more natural alternative?

We all know that there are so many harmful chemical ingredients that we should avoid putting on our skin and most especially that of our babies. Among the many different harmful chemicals such as fragrance, phthalates and triclosan --the common culprits found in baby products, there's one other chemical ingredient that we seem to sometimes forget, Triethanolamine (TEA).

Triethanolamine (TEA) is a chemical ingredient that is used as a pH adjuster/neutralizer. While this ingredient may be common and found in lotions, shampoos and moisturizers, it definitely has its fair share of harmful effects and should be avoided at all costs. According to Dr. Samuel Epstein, Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, repeated skin applications of products with TEA resulted in major increase in the incidence of liver and kidney cancer. Aside from that, EWG's Skin Deep Database has also labeled this ingredient as a human immune, skin and respiratory intoxicant. Now think about it, would you really want this chemical touching your baby's skin? No, right?

So make the switch and go for the natural alternative. Human Nature's 3-step baby care line gives the most natural care for your baby It's 100% natural, pure, safe and is borne out of a mother's love. After all, love knows no compromises.

Young Talented Filipina: Aimee

Sometimes, all we need is a little inspiration.

Today we want to share the story of our very own Aimee Solleza, one of the brilliant young Formulations Specialists at the Human Nature Natural Care Labs.

A graduate from Centro Escolar University, Aimee used to be a formulator and QAC analyst at another company but found herself wanting to take on a new challenge. A job search 11 months ago led her to discover Human Nature. Upon learning about about the advocacy behind Human Nature, she was compelled to take a stab at the job opening that was posted. Now, here she is, churning out fantastic products - some of which include the huge hits day and night moisturizers, strawberry facial scrub and baby lotion! This bright young mind never fails to impress us with her excellent formulas. Speaking of formulas...with every formulation this young Filipina genius comes up with, she always considers and keeps in mind our 3 core philosophies: Pro-Philippines, Pro-Poor and Pro-Environment and also thinks about the consumers - yes, you guys! This criteria makes our Human Nature Natural Skin Care Labs truly unique and innovative as it pioneers a new way of product development that gives back to the country and the poor. As difficult as this may seem, perseverance, inspiration, encouragement and, of course, prayers, have been constant companions to Aimee. So let's all give her a cheer and a huge round of applause for coming up with such great products!

Thanks Aimee! We're so blessed to have you as part of our Human Nature family.

Eco-Lifestyle: DIY Cucumber Eye Pads

Tired of puffy eyes and living off coffee? Not getting enough sleep leads to dark undereye circles and puffy eyes. Not good. Here's a natural way to get rid of those problems without all the chemicals or expensive eye masks.

What you'll need:
  • Blender or Juicer
  • Cucumber
  • Cotton Pads
  • Sandwich bag
    How to Make:
    1. Blend or juice a pint of fresh cucumber (mixed with water of course, it doesn't have to be pure cucumber juice)
    2. Pour it in a bowl and soak your cotton pads into the juice.
    3. Squeeze out the excess juice and place the pads into a sandwich bag. Depending on the size of your sandwich bag, you can fit as many as 6 pads in 1 bag.
    4. Throw the bag into the freezer until your eye pads are frozen. Freezing them will also keep them fresh since there are absolutely NO preservatives used in the mixture.
    How to Use:
    1. Before hopping into the shower in the morning, take out your eye pads and thaw them out.
    2. Once out of the shower, place the cucumber pads on your eyes for about 10 minutes. It should give you a nice cooling effect.
    Did you Know?

Cucumbers have a hydrating effect since they're composed of more than 90% water. They're also a good source of Vitamin K which shrinks capularies which will help reduce your dark circles. They're also great in helping soothe your eyes after a long day of staring into the computer.
